This section describes how to use the various controls on the camera, viewfinder, and monitor.

The seeker

If the viewfinder is held close to the eye, the eye sensor switches the display from the monitor to the viewfinder (note that the eye sensor also reacts to other things, such as your fingers). The viewfinder can also be used to display menus and reproduce images.

The diopter adjustment

To focus the viewfinder image, pull out and turn the diopter adjustment. Be careful not to accidentally put your fingers or fingernails in the eye. Push the diopter adjustment back in when you are satisfied with the sharpness.

Extensive use

If you use the viewfinder for a long time, you can change the brightness and color of the viewfinder image for a more comfortable viewing by using the custom function d8 (»Settings apply to live view «) on "Out" put.

The monitor mode button

Press the Monitor Mode button to switch between the viewfinder and monitor displays.

Press the Monitor Mode button to switch between the display options as follows.

  • Automat. Display switching: The display changes from the monitor to the viewfinder when you close the viewfinder and from the viewfinder to the monitor when you remove the viewfinder from your eye.

  • Seekers only: The viewfinder is used for recording, menus and playback; the monitor remains blank.

  • Monitor only: The monitor is used for recording, menus and playback; the viewfinder stays empty even if you look at it.

  • Prefer viewfinder: The camera works in a similar way to previous digital SLR cameras. When you close the viewfinder, the viewfinder turns on, and when you move your eye away from the viewfinder, it turns off. In photo mode, the monitor remains black, whereas in video mode, during playback or menu display, the monitor switches on when you take the viewfinder away from your eyes.

You can select the monitor mode using the option »Select the monitor modes are restricted. " in the system menu.

Touch operation

The touch-sensitive monitor can be used to change camera settings, focus and release, view photos and videos, enter text and navigate through the menus. Touch controls cannot be used while the viewfinder is in use.

Focus and release

Touch the monitor to focus on the subject at that point (touch AF). In photo mode, the camera releases when you remove your finger from the monitor (touch release).

Change settings

Tap on the highlighted settings in the display and select the desired option by tapping symbols or sliders. Tap Z or press J to confirm your choice and return to the previous screen.

Swipe left or right during full-frame playback to view other images.

When tapping the lower edge of the monitor during single image playback, an image scroll bar appears. Then slide your finger left or right on the bar to quickly scroll to other images.

Use the “spread” and “pinch” gestures to zoom in and out, and slide your finger to view other areas of the image. You can also zoom in or exit zoom playback from full-screen playback by quickly tapping twice.

Use the »Pinch« gesture during full-screen playback to call up the image index. Use Pinch and Spread to select the number of images displayed (4, 9, or 72).

Play movies

Tap on the operating help to start the film playback (video films are marked with the symbol 1). Tap the monitor to pause or resume, or tap Z to return to the image playback.

Tap the field you want to see its options.

Text input

When a keyboard appears, you can enter text by tapping the keys (to switch between uppercase, lowercase, and symbols, tap the keyboard selector button). You can move the cursor by tapping the text field.

Slide your finger up or down to scroll.

Tap a menu icon to select a menu.

Tap on a menu item to display its options and tap on icons or sliders to adjust settings.

To return to the previous screen without making any changes, tap Z.

The touch-sensitive monitor

The touchscreen monitor works electrostatically and may not respond in the following cases: if it is covered with a screen protector from a third party manufacturer, if it is operated with fingernails or gloves, or if it is touched in several places at the same time. Do not apply excessive pressure or touch the monitor with sharp objects.

Switch touch operation on and off

Touch operation can be done with the option »Touch controls« can be switched on and off in the system menu (0Touch controls).

The DISP-Button

With the DISPButton, you can show or hide displays on the monitor or in the viewfinder.

Photo mode

In Photo mode, pressing the DISPButton to switch between the following displays:

The adjustment wheels

The setting wheels can be used to set the exposure time and aperture and, in combination with other buttons, to change the camera settings.

Press the G button to display the menus.

Using the Menus

You can navigate the menus using the multi selector and the J button.

  • 1: move cursor up
  • 3: Move cursor down
  • 4: Cancel and return to the previous menu
  • 2: Select the highlighted menu item or display the submenu
  • J: Select the highlighted menu item
  1. Highlight the icon of the current menu.

    Press 4 to move to the icons for the menus.

  2. Choose a menu.

    Press 1 or 3 to select the menu you want.

  3. Move the cursor into the selected menu.

    Press 2 to move the cursor to the selected menu.

  4. Highlight a menu item.

    Press 1 or 3 to select a menu item (menu items displayed in gray are currently not available and cannot be selected).

  5. Display the options.

    Press 2 to display the options for the selected menu item.

  6. Highlight an option.

    Press 1 or 3 to highlight an option (options shown in gray are currently unavailable and cannot be selected).

  7. Select the highlighted option.

    Press J to select the highlighted option. To exit the menu without making a selection, press the G button. To exit the menus and return to shooting mode, press the shutter-release button halfway.

You can also navigate through the menus using touch controls (0 Navigating through the menus).

The symbol d (help)

When the d icon is shown in the lower left corner of the display, you can press the W (Q) button to view a description of the currently selected option or menu. Press 1 or 3 to scroll through the text. To return to the menus, press W (Q) again.

The i button (i symbol)

For quick access to frequently required settings, you can press the i button or tap the i symbol on the monitor.

Tap or highlight the menu item you want and press J to display the options. You can also change settings by marking menu items and turning the setting wheels. Menu items that differ from one another are displayed in photo mode (0 the i menu for photo mode) and in video mode (0 the i menu for video mode).

The i-menu during playback

Pressing the i button during playback displays a context-sensitive menu with frequently used playback options.

Customize the i-menu

The menu items of the i-menu displayed in photo mode can be changed using the custom function f1 (»Customize i-Menu«) choose.

  1. Choose individual function f1.

    In the menu of the individual functions mark the individual function f1 (»Customize i-Menu«) and press J (how to use the menus is described under "The G Button", 0The G Button).

  2. Select a menu item.

    Highlight an item in the menu that you want to edit and press J.

  3. Please select an option.

    Highlight an option and press J to assign the option to the selected position. Return to the menu shown in step 2. If necessary, repeat steps 2 and 3.

  4. Break up.

    Press the G button to save changes and exit menu customization.

The i-menu for video mode can be opened with the custom function g1 (»Customize i-Menu«) to edit; the options available are different from those for Photo mode.

The function keys (Fn1 and Fn2)

The button's Fn1 and Fn2 can also be used in recording mode for quick access to preselected settings. These buttons are assigned the desired settings using the individual function f2 (»User Def. Function assignment. "). The assigned setting can be changed by pressing the button and turning the setting wheels. The default is Fn1Button assigned the white balance and the Fn2Button to select the focus mode and AF area control.

Define the assignment of the function keys

The functions performed by the function keys in Photo mode can be controlled using the custom function f2 (»User Def. Function assignment. ") choose.

  1. Choose individual function f2.

    In the menu of the individual functions mark the individual function f2 (»User Def. Function assignment. ") and press J (how to use the menus is described under "The G Button", 0The G Button).

  2. Choose a key.

    Highlight the option for the key you want and press J. Select "Fn1 key" for the occupancy of the Fn1-Button, "Fn2 key" for the occupancy of the Fn2-Button.

  3. Please select an option.

    Highlight an option and press J to assign the option to the selected key. Return to the menu shown in step 2. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to set the assignment of the remaining key.

  4. Break up.

    Press the G button to save changes and exit menu customization.
