Who is really a workaholic anyway? Most people hope for one thing above all else: a pleasant job with nice colleagues where they don't have to work overtime all the time - in other words, a career for lazy people. That is a pious wish that unfortunately cannot always be implemented. This can be due to a high temporary order situation, staff shortage or illness-related absences in the team - and it becomes stressful and the workload increases for every colleague in the team. While some try under all circumstances to achieve maximum performance, there are also those in every team who are not interested in it and seem to get away with it. But how do they do it?

A career for the lazy instead of the hard-working?

It doesn't always pay off to work as much as possible at work. After all, word gets around when someone completes tasks quickly and thoroughly. It is even better for colleagues when this person seems to be asking for more work! But things can get tricky: If the tasks pile up at some point, there is a risk of overload. This in turn means that mistakes creep in quickly. And, unfortunately, these often stick in the minds of colleagues and superiors longer than the originally good performance. In the worst case, you will get bogged down and your performance will decline permanently due to the excessive load.

Which project has priority, which one can be neglected for it? In this way you create an awareness of how much work you actually have on the table. The myth of team productivity

Today, teamwork seems to be the panacea for practically anything. One expects better ideas, more productivity and a more successful distribution of tasks according to the respective skills and interests. But some people suspect that reality often looks different. Have you ever felt like working in a team doesn't always get around so much?

The Ringelmann Effect: The Phenomenon of Social Loafing

The so-called Ringelmann effect could be to blame for this. In the 1880s, the French agricultural engineer Maximilian Ringelmann studied the efficiency of the work of people and machines in the agricultural sector. To do this, he let students pull an increasing burden, first alone and then as a team. The result: Each student alone pulled an average of 63 kilograms of load. In teams of two, this performance sank to 59 kilograms and in teams of 7 people the dragged load of the individual was only 31 kilograms.

What does that say? Well, individual performance decreases significantly in a team. The Ringelmann Effect was born. This effect of social laziness was also known in 1979 as "social loafing". Of course, it varies, especially depending on the group size, the team composition and the existence of performance and progress controls. So there are of course teams that work better or worse, but the individual team members do not always deliver individual top performances.

The benefits of idleness

Laziness is often better than reputation - it just comes down to what time is spent that is not spent on work. Do you tend e.g. B. daydreaming when it is boring at work? You are in good company! Albert Einstein, the director Woody Allen and the author Joanne K. Rowling were (and are) avowed fans of daydreaming. According to their own statements, the three of them even owe their best ideas to their daydreams. This is not really surprising either, after all, daydreaming activates the right, creative hemisphere, while the left, rationally thinking hemisphere rests. Creative ideas that arise during this time can therefore flourish unhindered!

Laziness as a sign of intelligence

For this very reason, laziness should also be a sign of intelligence. According to this, intelligent people go about their daydreams and sink into their thoughts more often, while others need more external stimuli in the form of mental and / or physical activity. In addition, more intelligent people would manage their energy better. They would take more rest periods, but they could also perform at their best.

But back to the subject of work: Of course, hard work pays off when it is noticed. So it is also important what external impact your own work behavior has. Is it noticed? Or - in the case of the idler - is it not noticed? As is so often the case in your job, you have to make sure that your supervisor can also perceive your own performance. However, if you only want to keep your services on the back burner, you should make sure that the few services you provide attract attention.

When does it get tricky?

But of course there are also limits. It is true that there are always both better and worse, both productive and unproductive employees within one and the same company. First of all, this is nothing that a superior can take against a dismissal (but with other in-house measures!), Even if, of course, you would only like to employ hard-working employees. The situation is different, however, if it can be proven that an employee intentionally fails to work. Then sometimes the termination can also threaten. So of course you shouldn't sit back too much. After all, as an employee, you are obliged to do what you should. As best as you can. For example, those who use their working hours for private things can face termination without notice because they have deliberately failed to comply with this obligation.

1. Be lazy but efficient

What is the point of successfully completing a project if your manager doesn't even notice you? In the worst case, someone else will receive the praise afterwards. 6. Be loyal to the boss
