Should Kanye West, Taylor Swift and Co. take a political stance? This question divides minds.

Should celebrities from show business take a political stance? This is the question the New York Times asked its readers. Because with Taylor Swift and Kanye West, two influential pop greats recently did just that. The answers to the question varied.

Some think: no way, celebrities are responsible for escapism and have to stick with it.

The others think: Absolutely, they are even obliged to use their platform and speak to their fans in their conscience.

The third do not care about the political views of Swift, West and Co. For them, the only thing that matters is their creative effort.

From music to politics

The fact is: In the era of Donald Trump, celebrities from the entertainment industry feel compelled to make political commitments that have so far stuck to their neutrality. Like Taylor Swift.

So far I have avoided expressing my political views. Because of various events in the past two years, I see it very differently today.

President Trump, in turn, loves the attention it gets. Not least because he was one of them himself until he took office.

He personally attacks those who criticize him, such as stars like Jay Z and Beyoncé or various late night comedians.

Swift animates voters

Those who flatter him will be received with the honors of a state guest in the Oval Office - like Kanye West, whose bizarre summit with Trump took place there just as Hurricane Michael hit Florida.

The greats of pop culture manage to mobilize a segment of the population that politicians often try in vain to reach: Millennials.

According to surveys, only 16 percent of under-30s in the United States consider themselves politically interested.

However, no sooner had Taylor Swift's message, Link Opens in a New Window, made the rounds, in which she voted for two Democratic candidates in the upcoming general election, than the number of newly registered voters soared.

Flirt with Trump

The confessions of the stars for or against Trump also create strange alliances. Kanye West's romance with the US president has resulted in white Republicans applauding a black rapper for the first time in their lives.

In contrast, the extreme right laments the betrayal of the blond, blue-eyed Taylor Swift, whom she has hitherto celebrated as the “Aryan Queen”.

Advertising instead of arguments

Political statements by celebrities are discussed in the US media so extensively as if nothing else was happening in the world. The excitement about suddenly politicized pop idols demonstrates, above all, how wide their reach is now.

A person's influence is based on the number of their Twitter or Instagram followers. Fame alone replaces arguments. This makes it difficult to distinguish between what is relevant and what is irrelevant.

Political partisanship by a celebrity works like another type of advertising: whether it's a sneaker or a senator, lipstick or president - if there is a celebrity's seal of quality, there is no need to think. That is questionable. It doesn't matter if the star of this reality show is Donald Trump or someone else.

Everyone has the right to free opinion. Celebrities too. Just because you think someone's music is beautiful doesn't mean that you are forced to adopt your political opinion.

Wasn't it the case in the 2016 US presidential election that a large number of influential celebrities supported Hillary Clinton, but somehow it ultimately didn't make any difference? Or it can be that these stars don't have a particularly big influence because they mostly live in democratic states, 90% in California, the state always votes democratically anyway. The ultra-conservative states and the 50/50 states probably have only minimal influence ...

There is even speculation that the commitment of many celebrities is counterproductive for the Democrats. It could solidify the image of the rich, unworldly elite "up there" and motivate "normal" people to choose differently.

If the left and multicultural groups pull up some celebrities at every opportunity to promote a concert "against the right" or for "tolerance", that is completely ok. Only when someone who thinks differently does this does it provide a motive for questions of principle. Interesting!

I was about to write, but what the likes looks like is measured with two different measures. When jz dance around the white owl with Hillary Clinten, that doesn't interest the media, but when the unwanted trump gets involved with celebs, a red line is crossed.
