My new exhibition has been on view since March 21st. At the beginning of the year I worked hard and put together a new series. Under the title "Heimat im Licht der Wandlung" I show my own photographs and texts, written in calligraphy, "projected" into the photo and printed out on large-format canvases. The photos show motifs from the Saarland, the surrounding area, nature and also abstract views of details. The texts deal with transformation, change, metamorphosis and light and refer directly or figuratively to the current corona crisis.

from Sunday, March 21st, the exhibition is still open

According to the Corona regulation of the Ministry of Education and Culture, the museums in Saarland can reopen from March 19, 2021.
The museum for calligraphy and handwriting and the gallery of the Stiftung Schriftkultur e. V. have joined in this ordinance.
Since Sunday, March 21, 2021, it has been open every Sunday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. until further notice
. By appointment by phone or email
you are welcome to come to us, taking into account the current safety and hygiene regulations, of course.

A catalog was published for the exhibition. It shows 30 new works in color, comprises 40 pages in the format 21 x 21 cm and is available for € 10.

The idea for the exhibition was my annual greeting 2020/21.

Right at the beginning of the new year 2021, a report appeared in the Saarbrücker Zeitung on January 2nd, 2021, local section Homburg.
The basis for the text and illustration were my annual greetings (see below).

What a year, this year 2020! For all of us it was marked by great challenges, cancellations, waivers, discarded plans, losses, financial worries, fears - and for many also health problems. The year changed us and our lives. The coming year will show where the journey will continue.

All events, vernissages and lectures of the Writing Culture Foundation were canceled in 2020 - including the Christmas market, which was so beautiful last year and brought us over 1000 visitors in one day. The planning for 2021 is in full swing. Let's hope that a lot of this can also be realized.

Nevertheless, some courses took place at Gut Königsbruch. During the Saarland Summer Academy, the calligraphic baking book was created together with long-term course participants. A book full of artistically designed baking recipes and the successor to the calligraphic cookbook from 2015. I published it in my edition, and so far many have enjoyed this beautifully designed book.

In the summer, when face and nose masks were mandatory for all of us, I, together with some members and long-time dear companions, labeled fabric masks that were sewn for us calligraphically with funny or encouraging slogans. It was initially an aid project initiated by the Rotary Club Homburg-Saarpfalz. The masks were given away to retirement homes, disabled facilities or the blackboard and were gladly accepted. Further masks for sewing were later commissioned and also offered by the Foundation for Writing Culture - to this day.

This year, many loved ones who will be missed have passed away. We had to deal with risks, questions and regulations and reassess many things every day. There are also experiences that have brought us closer to the essentials. We are in the process of learning how to deal with the new situation and make the best of it.

For the year 2021 I wish the very best and the courage to look ahead creatively, positively and confidently despite everything. Above all, I wish the most important thing: good health!

Have a quiet, contemplative Christmas and a good start into the new year 2021

wishes Katharina Pieper

In the new Saarpfalz Yearbook 2021, which has just been published, a nice article about the Foundation of Writing Culture at Gut Königsbruch was published.
The author Heinz Weinkauf from Zweibrücken took a lot of time to talk about my career and development in a detailed and eloquent way
to report to the foundation in the historic Hofgut. Main editor and photographer: Martin Baus.

The CALLIGRAPHIC BAKERY BOOK has now been published!

More information: here

The calligraphic baking book was printed today in the Ottweiler print shop! After the drying phase, the printed sheets are folded
and the cover sheet is covered with a matt protective film. Then it goes to the bookbinder and the book gets its final appearance.
On the left the printer checks the quality of the printed sheets of the envelope, on the right you can see some offset color plates next to the printing machine,
who are waiting for their work and are held by the order management team leader, Ms. Quint.

100 pages, four-color, 21 x 30 cm,
Hardcover, language: German
Katharina Pieper Edition

The book can be purchased for € 19.80 directly from the Foundation for Writing Culture in Homburg and can of course also be ordered. Further information follows.

"This calligraphic baking book is the successor to the Calligraphic cookbook from 2015. The recipes were taken in the calligraphy course with Katharina Pieper
Written and designed in the Saarland Summer Academy in Blieskastel. The summer academy's advanced course took place in the 2020 corona year
took place in the rooms of the Foundation of Writing Culture in Gut Königsbruch, as some schools in Blieskastel were not allowed to be used. Most of the recipes were created here,
which can be found in this baking book. Many calligraphic styles have been written, painted, drawn, or stamped with a pen, brush, or lettering pen.
The corona situation with all the safety measures did not detract from the good, creative mood. For several weeks after the course, the
Original calligraphy on display in the gallery at Gut Königsbruch. Again very nice handwritten recipes were created, which are supported by further recipes
have been supplemented by long-term course participants. "

A few days ago I designed this logo for a meditation group. It was used on T-shirts,
and the brush lettering comes into its own in both black and white.
On the right photo you can see a wall design in a private kitchen that I made some time ago.

The Saarland Summer Academy recently ended. This year only a small part of the courses took place in Blieskastel, as some schools were not allowed to be used.
We have therefore relocated the calligraphy courses to us at Gut Königsbruch. With the advanced learners in Katharina Pieper's course (some participants
have been in Katharina's courses for over 25 years), recipes were created for a calligraphic baking book that will appear as a book in a few months.
It will be the successor to the calligraphic cookbook, which was also created in the summer academy (2015). At the end of the course there were many freshly written recipes
presented on the tables in the gallery. They can currently be viewed in the gallery of the Writing Culture Foundation on Sundays during opening hours.

The museum and gallery reopened on May 17th (International Museum Day). On the first day many interested people and members came
because there was a large cultural deficit due to the long corona period and the curfews!

On March 27th, 2020 a full-page report appeared in the Saarbrücker Zeitung in the series MUSEEN IM SAARLAND (supraregional)
about "my" museum for calligraphy and handwriting, the gallery, Jean Larcher and the Foundation for Writing Culture at Gut Königsbruch.
Despite Corona ... I was very happy! Unfortunately, the museum and the gallery cannot be visited at the moment. Hopefully again soon!

From Sunday, March 1st, 2020, the Katharina Pieper Gallery and the Calligraphy and Handwriting Museum
the exhibition at Gut Königsbruch in Homburg

to see with new work of mine. The topic is Eat, enjoy, temptation, and I have it in complex ways
artistically implemented. I have original calligraphic works on paper and canvas with photographs, most of which are from
Dr. Irene Özbek come, combined. This not only resulted in new colored text-paintings, but also prints on canvas and acrylic plates.
This exhibition will be constantly updated in the course of the presentation - work in progress. Parallel to the exhibition, the cookbook "Our recipe for Nepal"
The proceeds will go to a school project in Nepal and was initiated by the Rotary Club Homburg-Saarpfalz.

A few days ago I received a review of my new book SCHRIFT MEETS KUNST from Christophorus Verlag
which I was very happy about and which I would like to publish here.

Review by Nina Hartmann

"Ambitious writing enthusiasts who are interested in more than just practicing new handwriting need high-quality basic equipment. In her introduction, the author describes a wide range of tools, papers and colors. Representations of the most varied of writing samples through to applied fonts in art give one First insight into the possibilities of artistic expression: Using the example of some alphabets, different writing implements are tried out and possibilities of artistic expression are shown.

A detailed chapter is devoted to “Scripture as an Expression of Personality”. Fluid movement and your own rhythm shape free expressive writing. Only with the help of intensive training can it be possible to develop a very personal calligraphic font. Katharina Pieper, who was involved in the development of helpful exercises for students at various universities, shows examples from the first relaxation exercises through the development of your own handwriting to the modern use of hand lettering. The well-written texts and useful advice reveal the author's many years of professional experience and teaching. Numerous photos deepen what you have learned, stimulate your own ideas, but also show the artist's outstanding talent.

The last part of the book deals with the combination of font and color. When working with calligraphy, both the choice of colors and the painting media such as acrylic, gouache, etc.the expressiveness and mood of an artistic work. Using two step-by-step instructions, a wide range of image design (font and background) is covered. Complete work steps in words and pictures, together with tips and tricks, simplify rework.

Conclusion: This textbook shows the perfect symbiosis of writing and art. Advanced calligraphers who expect more than just learning to write handwriting will benefit from the author's in-depth expertise and useful advice and exercise suggestions. A selection of the most diverse works by Katharina Pieper shows how calligraphy and color can merge into a total work of art.

The review copy was made available to me by CV-Verlag. "

At the mini press fair in Mainz at the stand of the Fechner-Sabo publishing house (Mainz), some joint productions were exhibited,
such as our joint postcard series with texts by Henning Sabo (left in the picture) or the book "Time gently touches my breath".
The fair for artist books and small publishers in the Mainz Rheingoldhalle can still be visited today.

My new book "Scripture Meets Art" was published today! Last Saturday I received a package with a few specimen copies.
Just at the moment when I was writing this sentence, the postman rings with a large package of more specimen copies!

The book was published by Christophorus Verlag, has 96 pages and is now available in bookshops everywhere for € 17.99.

This book is about the use of color in calligraphy. The book shows a little historical insight,
working with ink, watercolor, gouache and acrylic as well as practical free alphabets for application. The subject of "lettering"
and brush writing is an important part of the book. Calligraphic and painterly techniques are described
and how they work together.

I have just come back from a workshop for the Anglaisevrienden Zwijndrecht in the Zevenkerken monastery near Bruges.
The theme was: experimenting with black and white. You can work out a lot in 5 days,
and with this group the workshop in the library's scriptorium was so much fun!
A few visits to colleagues and friends rounded off the week in Belgium.

Demonstration with the ruling pen (left). Table by Paul Carelsberg.

Works by Monique Moenssens and Cindy Severijns

A workshop with Elmo van Slingerland and Jürgen was just taking place in Jürgen Vercaemst and his family's Café "Morris".

Next Sunday April 14th at 11amr, the Foundation for Writing Culture opens the exhibition at Gut Königsbruch in Homburg

Gudrun Zapf from Hesse and Helmut Matheis

Both exhibitors are the oldest living type artists in the western world, each one is 101 years old.
After many preliminary discussions and encounters, it was possible to unite both type artists in one exhibition.
We are very much looking forward to this extraordinary and unique event. A catalog was also published for the exhibition.

End of the exhibition: Sunday, May 26, 2019.

It is finished! Today I sent the manuscript for my new book "Font meets Art" to the publisher. It will appear in the spring. Here is the announcement by the publisher (Christian Verlag, formerly Christophorus Verlag) in the publisher's brochure on the new publications that went to book dealers a few weeks ago. The subtitle of the book is not yet final. The publisher's description reads:
"This is where art and hand lettering meet: Katharina Pieper, calligrapher and type artist, shows how well they go together. Texts are artistically staged on various surfaces from acrylic to watercolor and gouache. Rhythm and expressive writing enter into a dialogue with the design Color. A basics of calligraphic writing, tools, writing fluids and the subject of lettering and modern handwriting makes it easier to get started. It also describes which font fits which content and what needs to be considered when designing the surface. "

11/16/2018 On November 11th, the joint exhibition "Fibers and Shapes Write Textures" by Edda Börner and Katharina Pieper was opened in the Kulturforum AULA Sulzbach. The paper artist Edda Börner shows paper art of the highest creativity and quality. Her works complement each other perfectly with the calligraphic works of Katharina. More information about the exhibition: here and there

10.9.2018 The grand opening of Gut Königsbruch after four years of construction and renovation took place last weekend. The inauguration took place through several official speeches and a blessing. Hunting horn blowers pointed to the early history of Gut Königsbruch as a hunting lodge. An organist and a flutist played in the Noah Chapel, and as a further highlight the group Barocco Royal Company from Saarlouis dressed in baroque robes. On the occasion of the opening and the Open Monument Day on Sunday, the exhibition "Words like Waves" was set up in the gallery of the Foundation for Writing Culture. At the inauguration, Katharina Pieper gave the owner of the estate, Dr. von Wegner, a filigree handwritten calligraphy in a late Baroque Gothic script: the résumé of Maria Amalie von Sachsen, who received the estate as a gift from her husband Karl II. August von Pfalz-Zweibrücken in 1766.
Further information and photos from the inauguration can be viewed here.

August 27, 2018 Last weekend, the Foundation for Writing Culture presented itself at the Medieval Market in Schönenberg-Kübelberg near Homburg,
which was held on the occasion of the 1000 year old market rights of the place. With our stand in the Kulturhaus we had a nice central place.
For the first time, the calligraphy women showed themselves in medieval clothing, which we wanted. Michaela, Brigitte and Ilse
demonstrated on both days and wrote calligraphic names and other commissioned work. Surrounded by medieval
Music, hustle and bustle and friendly people in not too hot weather made the weekend great fun.

Last week my calligraphy course took place as part of the Saarland Summer Academy in Blieskastel.
Our theme this year was "A Calligraphic Pilgrimage". Texts on the subject, Irish-Anglo-Saxon writings and
a meditative walk in the monastery garden accompanied us this week. Also the chapel and the restaurant "Pilgerrast",
in the adjoining room we were allowed to write, were gladly used.

Today I found out that my book "Kalligrafie & Handschrift", which was published by Christophorus Verlag in 2014, has already been published for the third time
and is about to be in the 4th edition. It has become the publisher's bestseller in this area, which of course makes me particularly happy!
The book can be ordered in any bookstore. A little tip: if you order the book directly from me, it will be signed with a personal dedication ;-)

Exhibition "Encounter with writing - calligraphy knows no borders"

in the new gallery of the Foundation for Writing Culture in Gut Königsbruch

The opening of our rooms was a complete success! Around 200 guests, family, colleagues and friends came, some from far away
(Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse, Baden-Württemberg, Lower Saxony ... and from Belgium, France, Austria ...) to participate in the successful ceremony
to participate. Mayor Rüdiger Schneidewind congratulated Katharina Pieper on the "absolute cultural highlight of the city of Homburg", Dr. Roger Münch looked
back to the previous collaboration with Jean Larcher and K.P. and was looking forward to further joint planning, Dr. Françoise Mathis-Sandmaier
gave a polished and moving eulogy for both artists, and at the end K. Pieper thanked everyone, including Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas
for the patronage, Gudrun Zapf-von Hesse for her generous support and Joke van den Brandt (Antwerp, B) who made her an honorary member
appointed by the Foundation of Writing Culture. The ecumenical women's group Bruchhof-Sanddorf with Rita Köhn presented K. Pieper
a generous donation for the association.

12/22/2017 In the meantime, some newspaper articles about the Foundation for Writing Culture are in almost all media around Homburg and even as far as Switzerland and Belgium
published. Many journalists came to our press conference at the beginning of December and were happy to find out more about our activities. Thank you very much
for the positive and detailed reporting! The written culture foundation was also featured in a report on Kaiserstraße on Saarland television
(Route Napoléon) and the Königsbruch estate mentioned. The SR media library can be clicked on our website.

I wish all visitors to my website a Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and fulfilling New Year 2018!

Katharina Pieper, 2017.
This typeface is based on the forms of a typeface creation by Jean Larcher, which he designed for his book “Traits de Caractère” (p. 197).

A very eventful year is coming to an end - combined with a completely new beginning.

In April, my association Stiftung Schriftkultur e.V., founded in 2016, was able to move into the new rooms at Gut Königsbruch. First of all, the office was set up, into which I moved in with Karin Fischer, my indispensable assistant and secretary, at the beginning of the month. Gradually the library, the gallery, the museum as well as a kitchen and a dining area were set up. There is even a nice terrace with a view of the greenery. At the end of July we also received the estate of my beloved Jean Larcher. His books and some of his calligraphic works were housed in the depot of the German Newspaper Museum in Wadgassen for two years. After all contracts between the Foundation for Writing Culture and the Museum and Jeans Daughters had been sealed, the books were able to arrive at their new destination on the former Route Napoléon, now Kaiserstraße - a moving moment.

The first courses took place in May 2017, and in the second half of 2017, not only did I lead ongoing courses and weekend workshops, but also the first guest lecturers Edda Börner and Heiner Müller. The planning for 2018 is in full swing. The association Stiftung Schriftkultur e.V. now has 76 members, of whom I am proud. At the suggestion of founding member Dr. Roger Münch, Director of the German Newspaper Museum in Wadgassen, the Foundation for Writing Culture has become a member of the Association of Saarland Museums.

A big event was the open monument day at the beginning of September. First of all, the official opening ceremony with a lot of celebrities and around 70 invited guests took place in the rooms of the Foundation for Writing Culture at Gut Königsbruch. The organizer was the State Monuments Office in the Ministry of Education and Culture. On the following Sunday, around 700 visitors finally came to the Hofgut to see the work that was already well advanced on the construction site. Architect Lars Maier and the von Wegner family themselves gave an insight into the interior, the baroque garden, the former horse stable, which is being planned as an event hall, and the newly built chapel.

There is still a lot to do at Gut Königsbruch, but every day it gets nicer and nicer. The official vernissage of the gallery and the museum is planned for May 2018, when most of the work in the immediate vicinity of the Foundation for Writing Culture, in the courtyard and in the parking lots will be completed.

My plans are gradually coming true. There is still a lot to be done - I am working on it and I am happy to be able to master and build up a lot together with wonderful helpers, thinkers, idea generators and font enthusiasts. Many thanks also to my family. We still have a lot to do!

Hopefully the Hofgut will be in winter white these days. Peace has returned after a year of tackling, planning, moving, setting up, sorting and archiving. Unfortunately, I couldn't do a lot in terms of calligraphy and art this year, there was simply no more time. But everything has its time, and the time for creative work will come again. 2017 was a year of new beginnings for me, my start into my new life, which I dreamed of many years ago and which I am now realizing step by step.

I wish you a Merry Christmas and a good start into a healthy and bright 2018,
in which much good and positive may move.

In the last few days articles about the Foundation for Writing Culture have appeared in various local newspapers:

News from the Stiftung Schriftkultur e.V at Gut Königsbruch

Jean Larcher's book estate, which was kept in the German Newspaper Museum for two years, came in these days.
All books have already been unpacked and sorted on the shelves and pre-sorted. Now the fine work and the archiving follows,
also in the large archive cabinets in the vaulted cellar. Katharina Pieper's specialist library will gradually follow. The library
and the archive of the Writing Culture Foundation are being completed! Right: Gut Königsbruch in the morning light - this is how it is presented
the estate is already very good, even if there is still a lot of work to be done in and around the estate.

The new courses from Katharina Pieper & Kollegen for the second half of the year at Gut Königsbruch
in the foundation written culture have just been published. Here we go!

here as a PDF for download

and here on the website of the Stiftung Schriftkultur e.V.

An intensive, quiet and very creative week at the summer academy in Blieskastel has just come to an end.
In the "Pilgrim Rest" at the Blieskastel Monastery, 13 participants were able to deal with the topic of "circle" in a calligraphic manner.
Fantastic results delighted not only the participants but also the lecturers - a well-rounded affair!

The second course took place over the weekend at Gut Königsbruch. On the subject of "Rotunda"
the participants learned ways to approach this round Gothic beauty in a traditional way.

The museum is gradually taking shape in the vaulted cellar. The first showcases were stocked last week.

View from the office to the gallery.

The work in the new rooms of the Stiftung Schriftkultur e.V. and around the entire Königsbruch estate continues.
A lot has happened in the last few weeks. However, it will take a while until the opening because the infrastructure is currently in place
is created. The courtyard is currently a major construction site. However, the entire interior is already being used intensively.
In the office, our control center, we sent the first newsletter for the members a few days ago.

The sandstone in the vaulted cellar was given a special treatment last week to strengthen it.
Now we can finally start furnishing the museum - the showcases have been there for a long time.

The large archway in the middle of the east wing of Gut Königsbruch is our main entrance. The front area, the former administrator's building,
is the architect's apartment and office. Even the toilets became showrooms, like the men's toilet here - the "Jean Larcher bathroom"!

Further information and pictures:

We are in! The Writing Culture Foundation has been the official tenant of Gut Königsbruch since April 1st. A lot has happened since then!
In addition to numerous handcrafted details on the building itself, the interior furnishings are also gradually being completed.
I moved into the office with my assistant and secretary Karin Fischer - the organizational work has been going on ever since
in our "control center". The room for the courses has been set up, and on May 6, 2017 I held the first workshop.
With a glass of Cremant, we toasted the success of the Writing Culture Foundation at Gut Königsbruch!

With Dr. by Wegner-Hauenstein and architect Lars Maier on the occasion of the official handover of the keys.
Right: Karin Fischer at her new position.

The first workshop can take place! The gallery is also making progress and, with the help of Heiner Müller, became presentable.

The exhibition "LETTERS KLEUREN Sint-Anna-ten-Drieën " in Belgium,
organized by the Anglaisefreunde Zwijndrecht, runs until April 9th.

I have just come back from London. The Letter Exchange company invited me to give a lecture about Jean Larcher and my new project at Gut Königsbruch.
The numerous members have traveled from far and wide: from all over England, from Scotland, Norway, Germany and New York. The lecture took place at the Art Workers Guild in central London.
In addition, thanks to Cherrell Avery, I had the opportunity to study manuscripts, some of which are over 500 years old, by important scribes in the library of the Victoria & Albert Museum, including
Edward Johnston, Bartolomeo de Sanvito and Pietro Bembo. A visit to the Tate Modern Gallery was also worthwhile, as was a nice walk through Central London in bright sunshine.
It was good to meet colleagues, to exchange ideas and to walk in the footsteps of the old - and new - scribes!

Following London, a few private days in the south of England followed, including visits to West Dean College and its garden.

Great Britain, I will be back soon!

My project "Foundation for Writing Culture" at Gut Königsbruch in Homburg is making steady progress. The structural measures are carried out with great care and a great deal of specialist knowledge, so that the rooms gradually take on their planned shape. A few days ago I was able to tour the interior with a group of the founding members. It will be spring by the time all work has been completed and the interior work has been completed. We are already looking forward to the inauguration, the first courses, the library and the Jean Larcher archive - and many more interesting projects related to the culture of writing! The beautiful baroque garden will encourage us to do calligraphic and artistic work and let our thoughts wander.

The new year is still young! I wish all visitors to my website
for 2017 health, courage and space to dream!

A lot has happened in 2016! Almost two years have passed since the death of my partner Jean Larcher in January 2015. That is quite a long time. And anyone who knows me knows that I didn't let it slip by idle, but that I dedicated myself to future projects.

The biggest project is my new gallery in the historical Gut Königsbruch near Homburg. The baroque estate was built in 1766 by Duke Christian IV of Pfalz-Zweibrücken. After a checkered history
it was privately acquired in 2014 and has been restored since then. By “coincidence” I found out that a use for the barn was still being sought. This was THE opportunity to give space to my dream of many years. The barn rooms in the east wing have been precisely for my needs since summer 2015
rebuilt and expanded. In addition to a gallery for permanent and changing exhibitions, a library, workshop rooms, an office, a small museum and a Jean Larcher archive are being built. In this way, Jeans books and his original calligraphic works also find a worthy setting. In the spring of 2017, the rooms should be occupied and
the gallery will be inaugurated. There is still a lot to do before then!

In order to give the whole thing an official name, I founded the association ”Stiftung Schriftkultur e.V.” in the summer of 2016. founded. The Königsbruch estate will be our new home, and both the founding members and all members who have already joined are looking forward to the new meeting point for those interested in writing, culture and art in Homburg. Not only I, but other experienced lecturers will be offering courses and workshops there. Lectures and musical events are planned and - let's see what else develops out of creative ideas ... I and the (founding) members have plenty of them!

Since spring 2016 I have been busy organizing, cataloging and archiving, together with my new secretary and founding member Karin Fischer, specialist journals, books, teaching documents and addresses. And a lot will follow ... I am very much looking forward to being able to tackle the future as a team with creative minds, sensitive hands and open hearts.

Annual exhibition of the Homburg artists

This year's contribution "Through space and time to the center of the universe".
This work was already exhibited in the spring of 2016 at the Biennial of Calligraphy in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.
Size: 75 x 200 cm

"Words flow to the center and flow out of it. The forms of the words carry the more than 2000-year history of the development of the Latin script and transport the movement of our culture. The forms interact with the content they convey: own thoughts about the center of the universe. Where is this point? Is there movement there? Or does this point consist of pure energy? What energy? Ideas, conceptions, feelings, truth, light? Rays - like sun rays, the writing lines pulsate outwards from the center of the writing image , They go beyond the boundaries of the paper. The eye of the beholder complements the ray-shaped lines. To where? To infinity. From this expanse, the rays in turn enter the surface and are found in a single point. Space and surface emerge in a dialogue, content and form interact with one another, and space and time become a concentrate - without dimension. "
