Which profession deserves significantly higher wages

Salary differences

The salary in every company is regulated by supply and demand. This means that each company decides for itself how high the hourly wage is set. For this reason, two identical jobs can be paid completely differently. The state itself does not intervene unless a company is suspected of exploiting its employees - for example because it pays immoral low wages. This often happens with seasonal workers when they are working on construction or on a plantation. Often this also affects foreign workers who come to Germany from neighboring countries to work. In order to prevent this yield, the so-called minimum wage was introduced, which is now at least 8.50 euros in every industry. There are still exceptions to the minimum wage - for example, children and young people are left out under the Youth Labor Protection Act - but overall, companies now tend to actually pay the minimum wage. Seasonal work is also slowly catching on.

Different industries pay different salaries

No work is paid the same. This is natural and legal, because different branches of the economy differ not only in their work, but also considerably in their usual salary level. The top earners work in service companies in the high-tech sector, work as business consultants or have a dental practice. The advertising industry, the pharmaceutical industry, the banks and the aerospace industry also pay good salaries and let their employees cost themselves a lot.

At the bottom, however, are industries whose employees, for example, have no training or no qualifications. These sectors include the fish industry, call centers, cleaning companies and construction workers. As a rule of thumb, the more complex and difficult the training required for the respective profession, the higher the salary in the end.

The differences between men and women

Salary differences are also gender-specific. Traditional male professions such as auto mechanics, construction workers or craftsmen are still paid better than traditional female professions such as hairdressers, educators, nurses or geriatric nurses. But even if a man takes on a female job, he often earns more than his colleague, because the “men's bonus” applies here and this work is rewarded more highly. If, however, a woman decides to take up a trade, she often has to be content with a lower or at most the same salary.

Salary differences within a company

Similar to the salary differences between different industries, salary differences within a company are also shaped. In the first place, of course, are the qualifications that the employee or salaried employee has. The higher the qualification and the better the training, the higher the salary. The higher earners include HR managers or home managers. An academic will always earn more, even as a newcomer to a young professional who is just getting out of training. Exceptions are creative professions such as graphic artist, copywriter or journalist. These professions are paid not only after graduation, but above all according to ability. Commitment, knowledge and creativity count in these professions. Therefore, it often doesn't matter whether a copywriter has a degree or “just” an apprenticeship. Because if the academic has no talent or ability, the trained copywriter or graphic artist whose work is convincing is preferred.

Differences in salaries in the hierarchy

If there are salary differences in a company, these should ideally coincide with the hierarchical company organization. Each higher level deserves significantly more than the one below. At the top is the company management. Below are the department heads or personnel managers. Most of them are employees, followed by temporary workers, postal deliverers and cleaning staff. But this structure cannot always be adhered to. Especially in times when there is a shortage of qualified workers, companies often advertise higher starting salaries. It may well be the case that the new colleague receives the same salary when hired as the employee who has been with the company for a number of years. A salary calculator can help to quickly and reliably calculate the salary differences.

Salary supplements

Further differences in wages result, for example, from bonuses or bonuses. As a rule, the higher the position of an employee, the greater the proportion of their flexible remuneration in the total salary. Bonuses, bonuses or special services are intended to create an additional incentive to do more and to do more in the company. Gender-specific differences within a company and across industries are also a widespread problem. Female employees sometimes not only earn less than their male colleagues in the same position, they also often have to do more. Overtime or special work are not the exception, but are often the rule. Of course, age, years in the company and personal criteria also play an important role in terms of salary. Salary differences can also arise due to the points just mentioned. An employee who has children receives a higher salary than a childless single because of the child allowance. This helps to clarify whether a salary difference is company-related or possibly due to personal criteria. Net salaries should therefore never be compared with one another.

Different salaries in creative professions

Every company is free to structure its salaries in such a way that they are sustainable for the company. But especially in the artistic or creative industries, there are big differences in salaries. The position of the agency or company in the market plays an important role here. A young agency that wants to employ a graphic designer may not be able to afford a high salary for the new workforce at the beginning of its foundation. In return, an agency that has been in the market for a long time and has established itself, often pays a higher salary than usual. In addition, there is a need for good workers, also in the creative field. So everyone who not only has the necessary qualifications, but also the necessary know-how, is taken advantage of just to start in the respective agency. Conversely, if you don't make an effort, you will find it difficult to find an employer who pays a good salary.
